Prosthodontics is the dental specialty concerned with restoring damaged teeth and replacing missing ones. Mark L. A crown is a restoration that covers, or caps, a tooth to return it to its normal shape, size and function, either to strengthen the tooth or to improve how it looks. A crown can restore a tooth when too little of it remains to support a large filling, protect a weak tooth from fracturing, rebuild a tooth that has already fractured, cover a badly shaped or discolored tooth, anchor one end of a bridge, or cover a dental implant.

A fixed bridge replaces teeth that are already missing. It is cemented to the natural teeth on either side of the space, and the replacement tooth, called a pontic, is carried by crowns that sit on those neighboring teeth and give the bridge its support.

Dental implants attach artificial teeth directly to the jaw. They are small cylinders of titanium and other materials that the body tolerates well, placed surgically in the upper or lower jaw, where they act as a sturdy anchor for replacement teeth. A single tooth implant replaces the root of the missing tooth and stands on its own, without treatment to the teeth beside it. Where several teeth are missing, implants can carry a bridge that asks nothing of the adjacent teeth. Because surgery is involved, candidates should be in good general health with enough jawbone to support an implant, and for some patients implants help preserve the bone where teeth have been lost.

Dentures replace a full or partial arch of missing teeth, and implants can be used to support them. Full mouth reconstruction draws these treatments into a single plan when wear, fracture or long standing tooth loss has changed the way the whole bite works.
